Watering your Jumper!

Updated: Jan 11, 2022

When the slings are first hatched they stay in the nest until they molt again. While they are in the web still I continue to mist the bottom papertowel/substrate and one side of the enclosure. After that molt they will start to leave the web. Once they are leaving the web you would start misting with a very fine mist. You can blow first if you want to make sure the little slings get out of the way. I find that a very fine mist doesn’t tend to do anything to them. I mist onto a papertowel/substrate in the bottom of the enclosure as it helps keep the humidity up for the molting slings. As the slings are moved out into their own enclosures I still mist daily onto a papertowel in the bottom of their enclosure.

I use paper towels but many people also use substrate with good results. I just personally find it easier to keep my enclosure clean this way and get the humidity that I need For my spiders. It also makes for a surface where they can see their prey very easily. For Phidippus regis and Phidippus otiosus they tend to need more humidity and I would suggest something like substrate may work better for those.

As they grow I still continue to mist daily for all of my spiders but I live in a very dry climate. In the winter I have to run a humidifier because the heating system really messes it up.

If they are molting I tend to give them a little extra moisture.

I also give my spiders with egg sacs a little extra moisture for the slings/eggs. If mom isn’t wanting to come out I mist near the enclosure entrance so she can peak out.

I know some people in very dry climates also say that they mist twice a day and this helps them in their situation. People living where the humidity is so high it may afford them to only mist on days that are needed and skip other days.

When misting any of my spiders I do my best to spray away from them. Some of them will become upset if you spray directly on them.

Hope this helps if you have any questions or comments feel free to ask.
